Hyattsville police announce new crime-fighting initiative

Police designated the University Town Center as one area where police will enhance crime fighting methods to lessen crime and attract more people to the city, which is now undergoing a heavy period of urban development.

Hyattsville honing a new image

"The flurry of development near the Prince George's Plaza Metro stop in Hyattsville, including last weekend's opening of Hyattsville's first movie theater in decades, has sparked a grass-roots campaign among city officials and developers to get the word out about the changes in the city. University Town Center, Belcrest Center and the Mall at Prince George's, which share a corner at East-West Highway and Belcrest Road, and the city of Hyattsville are exploring options to give the new commercial district an identity."

Safe Cities Project proposal to target commercial areas

"A safety initiative that would include emergency call boxes for commercial areas and a Web-based crime alert system is being promoted by the City of Hyattsville's police chief and touted as a way to deter crime."

"University Town Center President Herschel Blumberg supports the initiative, telling council members his company has a 'strong commitment' to it."
